The Performance Lab

The TPL Team:
Your Guides to World-Class Results

You won’t find staff like this anywhere else in the Valley. We require the best from our team, and they’ll require the best from you: We’re here to push you past limits you didn’t even know you had. We can teach you how to get the most out of your workout and how to do it safely.

Our trainers have worked extensively with athletes ranging from kids in t-ball to professional NFL players. We specialize in training underdog performers — if that’s you, we can help you get to the top.

Brett Butler

Brett Butler
Founder/Owner

Brett@tplsystems.com

Brett Butler doesn’t just help top athletes become healthier. He’s an athlete himself. This Modesto native and 2008 graduate of Downey High School was a multi-sport athlete in high school and college, playing football, basketball, and baseball — all while making the dean’s list. He received a full-ride scholarship to Delta State University in Cleveland, Mississippi, and racked up an impressive list of athletic titles. Brett moved back to California to finish his kinesiology degree at California State University-Stanislaus, and since his return he has worked with pro athletes from the NFL, NBA-D, PBA, and AFL. Brett’s goal for TPL is to empower the Modesto community, especially its young people. Growing up in Modesto, Brett saw many of the issues that continually prevent people from reaching their true potential, and he and his team are working tirelessly to make the community a more positive place.

John Potter

John Potter Owner

As a fitness enthusiast and long-time basketball player, John Potter quickly identified talent and further developed his love for the community while coaching at the junior high, high school and college levels – for both men and women. He has long believed in the importance of mentoring student-athletes, and TPL is a logical next step: A facility that will bring his mentorship program to the community, support fitness, and fulfill his mission of helping those who have the drive to help themselves.

John is an accomplished local businessman who is making his mark in the agribusiness and specialty foods industries. He is involved in the mentor education program at Sierra Vista Child and Family Services, and is excited to bring innovative opportunities to help empower people at any age.

John graduated from Modesto High School and Santa Clara University. To pursue basketball even further, he went back to Modesto Junior College at 37 and then subsequently enrolled at Columbia Junior College to play his last season. As an older adult competing with younger students, John had the opportunity to meet students who had passion but lacked vision or life plans. Inspired by with a similar vision, he and Brett Butler have set out to create an atmosphere that empowers others through physical fitness. John will utilize his business network to kick-off the informal mentorship and business sponsorship program.

Gabe Torres

Gabe Torres
Director of Operations

Gabe@tplsystems.com

Gabe Torres was born and raised in Empire, California, and helped Johansen High School earn its first-ever MMC championship in 2008. Upon finishing high school, Gabe went on to become the first person in his family to not only play collegiate sports, but to graduate from college. Gabe worked his way through school by earning internships and selling door-to-door during the summers — he even started his own refurbished golf cart business. He never stopped playing sports or volunteering at local elementary schools or group homes.

He earned his degree in diplomacy and world affairs at Occidental College in 2012 and spent time working for a public relations firm and in sales, but returned home in 2013 and began working at The Performance Lab. Gabe has become an essential part of TPL’s success: pulling all-nighters painting, remodeling, teaching classes, assisting with team trainings, developing partnerships, and managing events and memberships. H loves his TPL family and working with other dedicated, driven people — in fact, he says, it never feels like a real job.
